Form and its Function

Our visit to National Museum of Flight, a well preserved WWII airfield, located at south of the village of East Fortune, was truly inspirational.

The original wartime buildings, covered as a schedule ancient monument, have been well and sensitively preserved, one of them being ‘The Parachute Store’.

The design and form of the small structure fully follows its function; the increased central height to accommodate the hanging, drying and inspection of parachutes. The roof design which incorporates high level openable vents, assisted with the drying process, whilst few glazed windows ensured the sunlight did not effect the material structure.

The length of the structure is adequate to house a thirty foot table to aid with inspections, sewing repair and packing of the parachutes.

A simple structure, which housed a very important service during the WWII efforts.
